asleep at the trigger

25 Jan

this weather is seriously throwing me for a loop. snowy one day, warm the next. i have a theory that winter is playing a very cruel april fool’s joke. and i, for one, am not laughing.

anyway, my morning jacket has been cropping up in just about every teen drama on the air right now. verdict is still out on how i feel about them. so I decided to add one of my favorites to today’s playlist to get your opinion. do you think mmj is worthy of all the attention?

i am a sucker for songs featured in commercials. double points if i can identify the song before looking it up (like this one—yum!). as much as i hate to admit it, often times it’s how i first learn about many artists. case in point: a few years back i fell hard for the melodic song that played in the background of this walmart commercial. after weeks of researching, i finally found the song and artist on some obscure message board. the budding artist, zee avi, had an amazing collection of songs that i played over and over for an entire week. i was in love. and then my computer crashed and i forgot her name and couldn’t find the board again. fast forward two years to monday, when i heard her single, “concrete wall,” on one of my tv shows. and instantly, i was in love all over again.

(seriously, how cute is she?)

happy friday the 13th! [insert over-dramatic shriek here.]

while the date terrifies some—the fear of friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia (frigga being the name of the norse goddess for whom “friday” is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen)—it is seriously one of my favorite unofficial holidays. i’m not one to speculate, but the fact that i was born on friday the 13th may have something to do with it. just a hunch.

anyway, for all you superstitious folks, try not to break any mirrors, walk under ladders, cross a black cat’s path, or step on any cracks. and maybe throw some salt over your shoulder—you know, just in case.

hand me downs

10 Jan

ok, i don’t want you to panic or anything, but something must be seriously wrong with me. i woke up before my alarm clock went off this morning. i straightened my hair. curled it, too. i put on makeup and a new sweater. i even remembered to bring my lunch. weird, right? but wait, it doesn’t stop there: today’s playlist is surprisingly . . . cheery. at least in comparison with the last few.

i’m not sure what’s going on, but i’ll tell you one thing: i could get used to this. here’s hoping your day is equally awesome.

feature fridays: DOM

6 Jan

it’s friday! thank goodness. i don’t know about you, but i am so ready to wave good-bye to this week with a glass of wine and great company. and, if you’re like me—and the millions of others still clinging to their new year’s resolution to get healthy—some exercising may be in your future. which brings me to DOM. though neither albums are new, sun bronzed greek gods (bonus track version) and family of love are in heavy rotation on my running playlist. if MGMT and beach fossils had a baby, it’s name would be DOM. the result is some seriously swoon-worthy stuff.

happy 2012, loves! maybe it’s the starvation talking (it’s Day 3 of my attempt to repent all those cookies and cheese platters i single-handedly devoured), but i am so excited for the fresh start that this new year brings. 2011 was an amazing year for music, and i’m hoping that the music gods will once again come through in 2012. Just think: right now, a group of angsty teens are driving their parents crazy practicing what could be my next favorite song! oh, the possibilities.

speaking of fresh starts, one of my new year’s resolutions is to get serious about blogging. next week new releases and feature fridays segments return. And in the coming weeks, i’ll be introducing some other fun stuff for your viewing and listening pleasures. so stay tuned.

new theory

20 Dec

i am in a mad dash to the finish line, which, in this case, is friday, my last day of work for the year). every year, without fail, halloween hits and i realize i have the majority of my vacation days to burn through. so i end up taking the week between christmas and new year’s off. jealous? you should be! i can’t wait to sleep in and lounge around in my pajamas all day long. it truly is the most wonderful time of the year.

anyway, here’s a non-holiday playlist to get you the mid-week slump.
happy listening,
alicia ❤
